PHILIPSBURG - Police have confirmed that the body found in Fresh Pond behind the Seventh Day Adventist church Monday afternoon has been positively identified as Sumit Amarlal Acharya (20) of India, who was washed away during the flash flood on Saturday, July 30.
The deceased’s body will be flown to Puerto Rico where it will be cremated and the ashes will then be sent to India. Management and staff of Jewels Forever and Precious Gems Jewellery have extended sincere thanks and appreciation to the media, police, Government of St. Maarten, Public Works, Emerald Funeral Home, Indian Merchants Association (IMA) and the general public for their support.
The victim’s body was pulled out of Fresh Pond following its discovery by a search party consisting of Voluntary Corps St. Maarten VKS and Coast Guard, who responded to complaints from residents of a stench coming from the back of the church.
The team had been searching in the Saunders area where the victim was last seen on Saturday. He had allegedly been coming out of a bus and was speaking to someone on a cellular phone when he was swept away by the water. He was found floating on his belly wearing only his underpants.
The body was already decomposing and authorities had a difficult task getting it out of the water. They used a scoop net, a sort of metal stretcher with large openings, normally used by the Coast Guard.
The body was then covered with plastic and taken away by staff of Emerald Funeral Home. Meanwhile, police reportedly reviewed a videotape of the victim’s tragic accident, which would have been used to assist in finding him.
