Body found in Fresh Pond

PHILIPSBURG - A body, presumably that of Sumit Amarlal Acharya (20) of India, was taken out of Fresh Pond near the channel next to Seventh Day Adventist Church and close to the bird watching hut on Zagersgut Road Monday around 4:30pm.

The body was spotted by a search team consisting of members of the Voluntary Corps St. Maarten VKS and the Coast Guard. One VKS member explained that the team had been searching the entire canal from Saunders, where the missing man was last seen, for the entire morning. When they went back in the afternoon, they found the body.

About the identification, police spokesman Inspector Johan “Janchi” Leonard said late Monday afternoon, “Until a positive identification has been made, we can only assume that this is the body of the one person who was reportedly missing.”

Leonard said Police Inspector Tony Rogers and a team from the Public Works Department had been out since early Monday searching through the trenches leading from Arbutus Road in Betty’s Estate, but had been unsuccessful in locating the victim’s body.

The victim was probably swept away by the heavy floodwaters in the vicinity of Betty’s Estate/Saunders during the sudden torrential rains that hit the island late Saturday afternoon.

Leonard said Monday that police had been called by residents who said there was a stench behind the church. The victim was floating on his belly, wearing only underpants. The body was already decomposing, and authorities had a hard time getting it out. It was decided to use a scoop net, a sort of metal stretcher with large openings, of the Coast Guard. The body was then covered with plastic and taken away by staff of Emerald Funeral Home.

Police reportedly have reviewed the video footage of the victim being swept away that apparently was taken by a person whose name has not been mentioned. Details of the video recording have not yet been released.

The missing man’s cousin Chandan, who was at the scene together with another cousin, said they would be taking the body to India. “We have to take him to India and give it to the family so his soul can rest. We want the best, because he is our family, he lived with us in Ebenezer,” said Chandan.
