CHARLOTTE AMALIE (AP) - The deputy health commissioner of the U.S. Virgin Islands was convicted Thursday of defrauding the government by cashing more than $100,000 in duplicate government paychecks.

Lucien Moolenaar II, 60, has been on leave from his post for the past several months. He had pleaded innocent to the charges, saying he was not aware of the overpayments that took place between 1995 and 2000.

Health Commissioner Darlene Carty said she will discuss the matter with other officials to determine whether Moolenaar would be fired in light of the conviction.

A federal grand jury indicted Moolenaar last year, charging him with grand larceny, making false statements and conversion of government funds.

Shortly after the indictment, then Health Commissioner Mavis Matthew resigned.

Moolenaar faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced within two months. It was not clear if he would appeal the conviction.
