PHILIPSBURG - Leader of Government on Saba Christopher Johnson has stated that the Island Territory of Saba will secede from the Netherlands Antilles.

This announcement comes in the wake of the announcement from the Antillian Prime Minister that a decision has been taken to hold Parliamentary election in January of next year.

Saba he says believe that it is time for the constitutional games to stop and that the people must be able to get what they have voted for.

He noted that a Prime Minister in Curacao cannot continue to take decision that affect the future of the Island in the manner in which it has recently taken place.

While admitting that Saba is the smallest in the group of Antillian Islands seeking status change, he stated that they are prepared to make the most noise.

He stated that the legal process towards secession will now be started. He expressed a lack of confidence in the words of the Curacao politicians that they are working towards status change.

He said that with status change, a number of political positions on Curacao would be lost and as such, it is not in their political interest to bring about the chances quickly.

Commissioner Johnson stated that when the BES Commissioner Henk Kemp arrives on the Island of Saba on Tuesday, he will be presented with a letter from the Executive Council of Saba to the Dutch Prime Minister announcing their plans to secede.

He also noted the a boy-cut of the elections is not the way to go as the possibility exist that a group may seek to take advantage of the situation or the Island can find themselves in a situation where the Islands would be given an appointed Parliamentary representative
