African Heritage Museum to host emancipation activities from July 31

GEORGETOWN (GINA) - The Museum of African Heritage, under the management of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will be hosting activities for the 176th Emancipation celebrations in all 10 Administrative regions.
This year’s emancipation celebrations will be held under the theme “Our Culture, Our Strength, Our Survival,” and is aimed at fostering awareness, as well as encourage persons to get involved in cultural activities.
Activities including cultural programmes, religious services, candle light parade, road races, sports, drama, symposium and exhibitions will be conducted by various African cultural groups and will commence from July 31 and continue until the end of August, according to a press release from the Museum of African Heritage.
An exhibition will be held at Timehri on July 31, where African pieces including pottery, jewellery, clothes, art and craft will be on display. There will also be African music, drumming and food.
In addition, activities will also be observed at the National Park on August 1, as part of an annual event, where persons from various cultural backgrounds will have the opportunity to mingle.
The Culture Ministry, as part of government’s effort to preserve the country’s multicultural nature, recently donated cheques amounting to $1.6M to a number of African cultural groups for Emancipation activities.
The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) also donated cheques totalling $400,000 to three other groups.
Slaves were emancipated when Great Britain finally acceded to abolition of slavery on August 1, 1834.
