GEORGETOWN (GINA) - The Ministry of Labour views the human resource element of work as an equally important factor of production and as such will begin the annual Occupational Wages and Hours of Work Survey.
According to a release from the ministry, the survey is expected to begin on August 3 and will cover questions on wages and hours of work of various occupations as well as the employment costs component.
Statistics on wages and hours of work comprise one of the main branches of labour statistics and are essential in evaluating conditions of work.
The information garnered from the survey has the effect of providing the ground work for career planning and counselling, facilitates efficient allocation of educational resources and educational planning, provide data to potential investors and employers and provide data to unions and workers for effective bargaining.
Wages of employees vary according to the level of education, skill, occupation, type of industry, size of establishment and geographical location among other variables.

Data Extraction from Establishments
July 2010 will be used as the reference month for the survey and information would be secured from wages and salary sheets of the establishment for the reference period.

Collecting Authority
The conduct of the survey is guided by authority from two main sources; the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Convention 160 and Recommendation 170 and Chapter 98:01 of the Laws of Guyana.
ILO Convention 160 deals with labour statistics and the importance of countries ensuring that these types of statistics are regularly compiled.
Guyana is a member of the ILO and has strongly supported the progressive policies of the ILO.
The Laws of Guyana also requires businesses to submit information on labour statistics to the Ministry of Labour.

Response Rate
The Ministry stressed that confidentiality stipulations will be strictly adhered to, ensuring that the report will not identify the individual businesses, but highlight various trends in industries.
The response rate from this survey is expected to be very high, allowing for greater accuracy in the Ministry’s sixth survey so far.
The Ministry extended gratitude to both public and private organisations for their continued cooperation while acknowledging the importance of their contributions to the success of this year’s survey.
