GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Two men suspected of setting fire to a courthouse and shooting up police stations on Wednesday are escapees who are also suspected of burning down the South American country’s Ministry of Health, police said.
Chief Henry Greene said police had been looking for the suspects after they escaped from jail where they were being held on suspicion of burning down the ministry in July.
Three attackers dressed as police officers firebombed the wooden, colonial-era courthouse and a nearby school before shooting up a police station, striking one officer on the jaw and another on the ankle, said Georgetown Police Commander Leroy Brummel.
They also fired shots at another police station but hit no one.
It is unclear what prompted the attacks. No one has been arrested.
Greene said witnesses had identified two of the attackers as the men who escaped from jail in July.
Police were hunting for the men by raiding villages along the city’s southern edge where they believed gang members who masterminded the attacks were hiding, Greene said.
Officials have detained and questioned numerous people in July’s attack on the Ministry of Health, but they have not identified a motive for that attack. (AP)
