ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada - A comprehensive assessment of community-based healthcare institutions will be carried out throughout the nation in the next month.

In preparation for the exercise, a two-day skills’ enhancement exercise has been conducted for civil engineers, electrical engineers and architects employed with the Ministry of Works.

In the first of two meetings with visiting civil engineers Hugo Martinez and Tony Gibbs, the Ministry of Works employees were briefed on basic principles and advanced techniques necessary for conducting the assessment.

Mr. Martinez and Mr. Gibbs – both employed by the Pan American Health Organization - and the local participants also visited the Woburn Medical Station for a practical exercise in keeping with the principles and theories of safer hospitals and health care institutions.

Grenadian Tessa Stroude, PAHO’s Country Programme Officer, said Mr. Martinez and Mr. Gibbs were given the task of assessing all of the community-based healthcare facilities in Grenada to determine the structural and non-structural aspects of those institutions.

She said local engineers were included in this important mission since at some point they will be called upon to advise the Government of Grenada on matters relative to the construction, expansion and rehabilitation of the healthcare institutions.
