ST GEORGE'S, Grenada - Participants at the Oncology Registration workshop now taking place in Grenada, say much of their expectations are already being met and that the country’s oncology programme is poised to benefit significantly.
Participants noted that understanding the correlation between accurate and timely data entry and analysis, especially as it relates to new cancers, new clients and treatments, will not only benefit patients individually, but the oncology program as a whole.
Participants are of the view that having a better understanding of the functions and importance of cancer registration will impact positively on their work. They agree that it is one of the tools the Ministry can implement in planning its cancer care and other healthcare programmes.
Facilitator of the work shop, Ms. Veronica Roach who is considered an expert in the area of cancer registration has commended the Ministry of Health for the establishment a national cancer registry.
She said it is a step in the right direction in order to administer proper care and treatment to survivors.
Ms. Roach, who is the registrar in-charge of the National Cancer Registry of Trinidad and Tobago, says while there will be challenges, the Ministry’s work and efforts in addressing the disease will be enhanced.
She added that accurate documentation is “critically and fundamentally important” to properly understand the severity of the disease and how it is impacting on the Ministry’s plans, programmes and resources.
The workshop began on Monday, at the conference room of the General Hospital.
