ROME (PL) - Cuba condemned Friday promotion of consumerism, with an expense of billions of dollars in trade publicity, waste of natural and energy resources, along with military budgets growth.

Addressing the 36th FAO General Conference, Cuban ambassador Enrique Moret also criticized the use of food to produce energy, measures, and unfair trade policies of wealthy nations.

The Cuban permanent representative to the FAO stated that the figure of 1.02 billion malnourished people is morally unacceptable and incredible.

About challenges for humanity, Moret talked of the persistence of poverty, starvation increase, climate change, the strengthening of international economic, financial and energy crisis and consequences in food prices.

Moret stressed FAO's efforts and labor and the dedication of its Director-General Jacques Diouf, as well as reiterated support to the UN entity on occasion of its 65th anniversary.

The diplomat also referred to the transcendence of the reform process in FAO and the Food Security Committee, steps to make durable solution viable.
