PHILIPSBURG/Bonaire - The ruling Democratic Party (DP) on the island territory of Bonaire of which the leader is senator/councilman Jopie Abraham, met with the Dutch state secretary of Kingdom relations, Ank Bijleveld-Schouten on Monday.
The meeting was in the first instance, to officially introduce the new cabinet and also to discuss the constitutional process. However, that meeting ended on a very sour note.
Senator Jopie Abraham stated on Tuesday that the Dutch state secretary wanted to discuss a letter that the Government had sent to the Dutch, outlining certain changes to the statute of the Kingdom and that this was unacceptable to the island and its people.
Abraham also indicated that the Dutch official even wanted to the Government to withdraw the letter.
The Government have decided not to budge on their demands to be fully integrated into the Dutch Kingdom in a manner that the people will enjoy the full benefits of being part of the Dutch Kingdom and not for partial benefits as is now the case.
The DP leaders also accused the Dutch State Secretary of trying to blackmail the Island of Bonaire with Dutch money.
He stated that the State Secretary stated reminded them that the Dutch Government will be paying the debts of the Island and if they continue their course, the money air-marked for the Island will be stopped.
Senator Abraham then stated that he told the Dutch official to put her comments in writing, something that she did not do.
As you can now hear via PodCast, State Secretary Bijleveld-Schouten also has a problem with the referendum that the Government is now planning.
