HAMILTON, Bermuda - Police are being given more power to get tougher on crime, it was revealed yesterday.
Officers will have greater authority over when and how they can lawfully enter private premises.
Attorney General Kim Wilson said: "This includes powers to search for evidence and/or persons suspected of having committed a crime. It also includes powers to seize, retain and copy evidence found to assist in the investigation of offences."
The changes are part of the third and penultimate phase of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 2006, known as PACE.
A new type of search warrant can be applied for that will allow police to search several premises during the same investigation and permit multiple entries of the same premises.
This will reduce the number of applications and give more flexibility to the police to enter and search premises. Safeguards include the warrants being subject to approval by an inspector before being applied for. (Bermuda Sun)
