BELMOPAN - The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) and the National Service of Plant and Animal Health (SENASICA) of Mexico, have approved funding transfer of US$700,000.00 from OIRSA (Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health) Mexico to its counter-part OIRSA- Belize.
This money is aimed to assist the country’s citrus industry in the containment of Citrus Greening Disease.
The agreement calls for the execution of a one year work-plan for the surveillance and control of the disease. Citrus greening, also known as Huanglonbing (HLB) is one of the most dangerous diseases to ever threaten our citrus groves. This disease is caused by phloem-limited bacteria and is spread by an Asian Citrus Psyllid. Symptoms include severe leaf drop, reduced fruit size, bitter tasting fruit, poorly colored fruit and excessive fruit drop. Other member of the delegation that reprsented Belize were technical personnel of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority, Mr. Escandar Bedran, Chairman of BAHA, Mr. Fermin Blanco, OIRSA Country Representative.
Signing the special agreement was Dr. Enrique Sanchez, Director of SENASICA; Mr. Guillermo Alvarado, Executive Director of OIRSA and Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries of Belize, Hon. Rene Montero.
