Marion Jones Sporting Complex off to a start

BELMOPAN - A Groundbreaking and Signing Ceremony to commence Phase 1 of works at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex took place yesterday at the construction site on Princess Margaret Drive in Belize City.

Executive Director of the National Sports Council, Mr. Anthony Michael, mentioned that the construction of this long-awaited sporting complex will finally allow Belizeans athletes to train in proper and adequate facilities and compete in sporting events while allowing spectators and the country to experience the home court advantage in competitions.

Minister of Youth, Sports, Information and Broadcasting, Hon. Elvin Penner in his keynote address, welcomed the construction of the Sporting Complex and stressed the impact that the project would bring to the city, “this will be in terms of employment, uplifting the facial looks of the city and most of all for the sporting activist and our fans.”

In closing, he mentioned that the Government will be offering Sports scholarships for the first time to ten students entering High School providing that they are actively involved in any of the five Ministry-sponsored sports: Track and Field, Football, Volleyball, Softball and Basketball and that they also possess a satisfactory academic record.

The First Phase of Works will only include the construction of a perimeter fence and also any preparatory work for the building construction. The contract was awarded to L & V Construction Management Limited. Mr. Herman Longworth signed on their behalf and the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Elvin Penner signed as the employer. Works are proposed to conclude within an eight month period, thereafter allowing for a bidding process for the Phase 2 stage. The contract is valued at approximately BZ$1.5 Million.

The event included the attendance of seven other Ministers of Government including the Minister of Works, Hon. Anthony “Boots” Martinez and Minister of National Security, Hon. Carlos Perdomo both contributing remarks at the ceremony.
