Reminder for Justices of the Peace

By Government of Belize Press Office

Posted: Aug 20, 2009 11:45 UTC

BELMOPAN - It has been brought to the attention of the Attorney General’s Ministry, that some Justices of the Peace are not complying with their mandate to ensure that the persons who present themselves to them to authenticate documents are the correct persons.

In one instance, Solicitor General, Oscar Ramjeet said that he has received a complaint that a document which was purported to be signed by a landowner on 10th June, 2009 in Belmopan, for the sale of his property at Hopkins could not have been signed by him since he has been residing outside of Belize for more than four years and never returned home since his departure in 2005.

The brother of the land owner suspects fraud and has reported the matter to the police.

Mr. Ramjeet has warned Justices of the Peace to ensure that they be presented with photo identification in order to ensure that the person who seeks to have documents authenticated is not an imposter.

The Solicitor General added that Justices of Peace are advised that they should make an entry of all documents they sign in a note book which they should keep in their possession at all times.
