BELMOPAN - Honorable Rene Montero, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Honorable Erwin Contreras, Minister of Economic Development, Commerce, Industry and Consumer Protection yesterday met with a delegation from HELLENIC Fish Farming SA, a group of investors interested in investing in the fishing industry in Belize, who arrived in the country on Wednesday, 12th August, 2009.
The strictly fact finding mission will be looking at the different types of fishes in Belize to determine which will have the market potential for export. Once this is identified, they plan to sign an agreement with government for them to invest in Belize, thereby creating five hundred (500) direct and one thousand (1,000) indirect employments; as well as foreign exchange for the country. It will not compete with our local fisher folk.
This project is viewed as a very good venture that will benefit the country of Belize and has the support of both Ministries.
The group will be working closely with the Fisheries Department and will be making site visits to Nova Shrimp Farm, as well as locations in Southern Belize. The visit ends on Tuesday, 18th August, 2009.
The Hellenic Fish Farming SA, a Greek company, has achieved a consistently dynamic growth in juveniles and on-growing fish production, and in 2000 it became listed on the Athens Stock Exchange. It is also one of the leading companies in the Greek and Mediterranean Fish Farming Industry and has managed to penetrate and maintain a strong presence in the biggest European fish markets such as Italy, France, Spain, Unite Kingdom, Germany and Portugal
