BRIDGETOWN (BGIS) - The Villages housing development at Coverley, Christ Church, has already provided some employment for a number of small contractors and businesspersons.
This, from Housing Minister, Michael Lashley, while delivering the feature address at the official opening of the first phase of The Villages, last Saturday evening. He described this as one of the many positives of the development. "I am informed that a number of tilers, plumbers, carpenters, landscapers and painters have been employed on this project, thereby providing jobs for a large cross section of tradesmen throughout the country... I am instructed that 50+ small contractors have been employed and currently 600 persons are employed on this site and I certainly want to congratulate the developers for maintaining their faith and confidence in this economy by providing work for Barbadians in these trying economic times," Minister Lashley commented.
The Villages community is expected to be completed in 2012 and will include 1,026 homes and a town square, where numerous amenities such as retail, medical, day- care and recreational facilities will be located, with leasing opportunities available.
"I am reliably informed that residents will have first option to access these opportunities, thereby creating a live and work in the same community concept. This is welcomed news in today's environment because we will be developing and empowering a new business class, and by extension generating further employment and economic activity," Mr. Lashley explained.
The private sector building partnership started in 2009 and it is projected that by December this year a minimum of 300 homeowners will take up residence at Coverley. lbayley@barbados.gov.bb
