BRIDGETOWN - The buyers' club, proposed by the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) is on hold.

President of the trade union Walter Maloney told the DAILY NATION on Tuesday they were in the process of looking for a partner.

"We have started preliminary negotiations and once that is done we will make an announcement to the members," he said.

Maloney declined to say who they were in discussions with, but noted the club would be operating from the Wildey, St Michael location they had identified.

Ten people should find employment when it opens its doors.

Originally the club, set up to help its members cope with the rising cost of living, was scheduled to open towards the end of 2008 with an expected membership of 10 000.

Members would be able to buy the 100 items that included sugar, flour, napkins, juice boxes, canned fish and meats, legumes, cooking oils and toiletries.

In an earlier interview, Maloney had said $600 000 was needed to start the club and in order to get that 5 000 shares would be offered at $120 per share. (DS)
