MOUNTFITZWILLIAM, Nassau (BIS) - Forty-three Officers from Her Majesty’s Prison, Fox Hill, received Prison Long Service and Good Conduct Awards during ceremonies at Government House, Mount FitzWilliam on Thursday.
Twelve Officers received Long Service Medals for 18 years of service; 18 received awards for 25 years of service, while 13 received Long Service Medals for 30 years of service.
Minister of National Security the Hon. O.A.T. “Tommy” Turnquest told the honorees that their years of long service “speaks well of the continuing stability to the institution.”
“We know that Prison Service is a challenging and often daunting profession which carries with it, potential personal risks,” Mr. Turnquest said. “Yet it is a profession that you chose and to which you remained faithful for decades. Importantly, you conducted yourselves in a manner expected of a disciplined Force during your years of service.”
Mr. Turnquest told the honorees that they are among those persons “uniquely placed” to recognize the changes taking place in The Bahamas, particularly as it relates to the increase in crime and criminality.
“These changes would have become evident to you from the number of young offenders, particularly young males, coming into the Prison; from the increase in the prison population and from the nature of the crimes, particularly violent crimes, for which offenders are being incarcerated,” Mr. Turnquest said.
The National Security Minister said while the Government of The Bahamas, through the Ministry of National security and Prison Administrators have set new priorities to be able to better respond to changing circumstances and to help bring the prison in line with international standards through sweeping Prison Reform, it is Prison Officers upon whom the success of Prison Reform depend.
“I urge you to continue to serve with commitment, dedication, professionalism and integrity,” Mr. Turnquest said. “I urge you to continue to use your experience and expertise to provide leadership, and to make your necessary contribution to the successful management of the Prison.
“I urge you to continue to be a part of the initiative to change mindsets, attitudes and practices that are out of step with the development of an improved and reformed Prison. I urge you to continue to be scrupulous in your respect for, and observance of, the laws and regulations governing Prison Service,” Mr. Turnquest added.
