NASSAU (BIS) - The hazards of using cellular phones while driving will be highlighted during November - Road Safety Month.

“We want to raise public awareness of the proper use of our streets in an effort to reduce the number of traffic injuries and fatalities that occur throughout The Bahamas,” said Minister of Works and Transport, the Hon Neko Grant, Monday.

Some 500 persons have died in traffic accidents over the last ten years in The Bahamas.

Bahamians will be encouraged to car pool or use the public transportation system.

Ensuring that Bahamians are well versed in the Highway Code will also be featured during the month.

And, the dangers of drinking alcohol beverages and driving will also be underscored, particularly as the Bahamas enters the festive Christmas season.

The month of observances rounds out on November 29 with church services to remember those who have died in road traffic crashes.
