NASSAU, Bahamas - Governor-General, His Excellency Arthur D Hanna accepted the Letters of Credence of His Excellency Yamaguchi Hiroshi, as the Non-Resident Ambassador of Japan to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas during a ceremony at Government House.

The Governor-General said he was delighted to receive personal greetings from His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan, who expressed optimism for the realization of more enhanced relations between both countries.

The Ambassador was accompanied by his wife, Yoko Yamaguchi.

The Bahamas and Japan formed diplomatic relations in March 1975 in the areas of trade, education, cultural exchanges, Japanese language training programs for public officials, and an information technology program for young officials from Latin America and the Caribbean.

“I am pleased to know that two more Bahamians are availing themselves of the Japan-Caricom invitation program on environment and climate change, and the Japan-Caricom young diplomats invitation program,” The Governor-General said.

The Bahamas recognizes Japan’s commitment to global development and its sensitivity to the needs of small island States, he said.

“We look forward to partnering with Japan, especially through capacity building initiatives in relation to information technology, export and trade, investments, tourism, the development of the fisheries industry, and the mitigation of natural disasters,” he said.

He noted that The Bahamas and Japan also interface through the Japan-Caricom Friendship and Cooperation Fund and multilaterally, through membership in international organisations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.

“We are greatly encouraged by our interaction in these and other areas, and will continue to support movement toward the ideals of international peace, security and sustainable development,” Governor General Hanna said.

Ambassador Yamaguchi, 62, underscored the importance of forming such diplomatic ties between The Bahamas and Japan.

“It is important for our two countries to forge closer bonds with the aim of achieving wider-ranging goals, further diversification, and deeper understanding.

“To this end, the Government and people of Japan look forward to furthering ongoing collaborations with the Government and people of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas,” he said.

Ambassador Yamaguchi, who serves out of Kingston, Jamaica, passed his Diplomatic Service Examination in November 1967.

He entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Japan in April 1968 and served in Greece, Mexico, El Salvador, and as Consulate-General of Japan in Miami, Florida.

In February 2001, he was appointed Director, Caribbean Division, Latin America and the Caribbean Affairs Bureau; in July 2002 appointed Senior Regional Coordinator, Oceania Division, Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau; and Deputy Chief of Protocol in March 2004.

Ambassador Yamaguchi also paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister, the Rt Hon Hubert Ingraham, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon Brent Symonette, and members of the Diplomatic Corp.
