NASSAU, Bahamas (BIS - Members of Alliance Française paid a courtesy call on Governor General, His Excellency Arthur D Hanna, for a moment of cultural exchange earlier this month.
They introduced their new president, Nathalie Feix-Scott, and presented the Mr. Hanna with a souvenir CD of French folk music icon, Charles Trenet.
Alliance Française invited Mr. Hanna to participate in cultural activities it offers, the most popular being the Cine Club which showcases French movies with English subtitles.
Mr Hanna has an understanding of French. He studied Greek and Latin while completing his law degree in England.
The Hanna family has been a member of the Alliance Française for some time, noted treasurer and administrator, Italia Watkins-Jan.
“Since Bahamians can travel to France without a tourist visa, it is a good time for cultural exchanges between the two countries,” she said.
French Consul, His Excellency Marc-Olivier Gendry, presented his Letters of Credence as France's Ambassador to The Bahamas on May 21. There are about 200 French ex-pats in The Bahamas.
“When children learn a language at an early age, it will prepare them for a borderless community,” said Mrs. Watkins-Jan. ”Learning another language is like opening your eyes to the world.”
