ST JOHNS, Antigua - As the Ministry of Finance, the Economy and Public Administration continues to engage stakeholders in round-table discussions, other groups given the opportunity to air their views were a number of social partners and representatives of the ground transportation sector.

In its presentation on Monday, the Ministry highlighted the government's Fiscal Consolidation and Debt Sustainability Programme to reduce expenditure and increase revenue.

Represented at the consultation were: The St. John's Taxi Association, the Antigua and Barbuda Taxi Association, Antigua and Barbuda Pensioners' Association, Antigua and Barbuda Bus Association, and the Community Development Division and Citizen's Welfare Division of the Ministry of Social Transformation.

The consensus was that the discourse was fruitful and useful, and although more work has to be done on the proposed measures before implementation, participants thought the plan presented by the Finance Ministry is feasible, once monitored properly.

The participants suggested that mechanisms should be put in place to ensure that more persons contribute to the Medical Benefits Scheme and Social Security, since it is unfair for all to benefit from the contributions of some.

Other recommendations include increasing supervision of the use of government vehicles and implementing a proper system to monitor outsourcing.

Minister of Finance, the Economy and Public Administration, Harold Lovell, appealed to participants to support the government's public education efforts by sharing the information received at the consultation with the members of their associations. He indicated that by sharing the information with their general membership, these associations would be making a valuable contribution to the public education and awareness efforts of the government.
