ST. JOHN'S, Antigua - Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda has welcomed Antigua and Barbuda's improvement in the rankings of the United Nations Development Programme, Human Development Index.
In the UNDP's Annual Report released on Tuesday, Antigua and Barbuda is ranked number 47 as having a high human development, moving upwards by 12 points since the last report for 2007.
"My Government welcomes the latest figures on Human Development in Antigua and Barbuda and in fact it does not come as any surprise at all that we have done so well not only within the Caribbean by being the 2nd highest ranked nation, but also within the Americas which includes the USA and Canada, we are ranked 5th. I say no surprise because my government's policies have always been designed with the interest of the people at heart. Our education policies are people centred. Health care-people centred, and I can go on," outlined Prime Minister Spencer.
" Since coming into office I can justifiably say that we have managed to improve the lives of a significant number of Antiguans and Barbudans-ranging from our pensioners to individuals in the private sector. Although this year has proven to be a challenge because of the world economic situation, I can assure you that the United Progressive Party Administration will do all in its power to ensure that the people of this country maintain a high standard of living," added the country's leader.
The only other Caribbean country ranked higher that Antigua and Barbuda on the Index is Barbados, which is ranked number thirty-seven. Cuba is ranked at 51 with Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and Saint Lucia ranked 62nd, 64th and 69th respectively.
The Human Development Index measures how a country widens the options of its people by giving them greater opportunities for educational advancement, improved health care, income and employment among other things. In principle the HDI measures a country's development.
