Kick Em Jenny Volcano -Eastern Caribbean
KINGSTON (ODPEM | Jul 23, 04:30PM) -- The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) wishes to advise that the Caribbean region and sections of the Eastern Caribbean in particular have been placed on alert as heightened seismic activities have been detected by the Seismic Research Unit (Trinidad).
The Kick ‘em Jenny, an active submarine volcano or seamount on the Caribbean Sea floor, experienced a minor underwater eruption, but does not pose a major threat for tsunami at this time according to Ronald Jackson, Executive Director - CDEMA. The volcano is located 8 km (5 mi) north of the island of Grenada and about 8 km (5 mi) west of Ronde Island in the Grenadines.
An Orange alert is in effect for sections of the Eastern Caribbean. This means that there is an elevated level of seismic activity or other unusual activity and eruption can occur with less than 24 hours’ notice. The ODPEM and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information emerges.
