PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (GISL) -- La Quan Pearie, first ever Junior Minister of Tourism, placed second in the Caribbean Tourism Organization's (CTO) Tourism Youth Congress 2016.

Our Junior Minister of Tourism gave a riveting speech on the topic “The Customer’s Perception of the Brand”.

Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Shamfa Cudjoe, presented Junior Minister of Tourism, La Quan Pearie of Manzanilla Secondary School with his “Instruments of Appointment” on Tuesday September 13, 2016. This took place at the Official Send-Off Ceremony at the Manzanilla Secondary School itself.

For the first time, Trinidad and Tobago had representation at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO’s) Tourism Youth Congress, which was held on Friday September 16, 2016, at the Hilton Barbados Resort, Needham’s Point in Barbados.

The Tourism Youth Congress is structured to mirror a CTO Board of Directors meeting and its main aim is to stimulate greater awareness and excitement about tourism among young people in the Caribbean Community by allowing them to research various facets of the tourism sector and share their ideas and vision with respect to future directions for Caribbean Tourism.

Minister Shamfa Cudjoe, in her address to students and teachers of Manzanilla Secondary School, encouraged “students to get involved in tourism as this industry is one of the fastest growing and most dynamic sectors globally; empowering young people and providing opportunities for growth. Minister Cudjoe affirmed that “this Government is committed to investing in young people and preparing them for careers in the tourism industry, and encouraging diversification of the nation’s economy”.

Selected as one of the outstanding Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) Young Leaders for 2016, 16-year-old fourth form student La Quan is also:

A leading Member of the Manzanilla Secondary School Debate Team
Recipient of the Lucille S. Antoine Leadership Scholarship
Founder and President of a non-profit organisation called P Over N: Positivity Over Negativity

During his tenure as “Junior Minister of Tourism”, La Quan Pearie will act as Trinidad and Tobago’s Youth Ambassador for Tourism, with responsibility for leading community tourism projects, engaging tourism stakeholders across Trinidad and Tobago and promoting the establishment of tourism youth clubs throughout our twin island Republic.
